  • Please finance my voyage, I know of a faster route to Asia.
  • Christopher Columbus pleaded with the king and queen of Spain for financial aid to support his voyage after the king of Portugal declined him. While the rulers admired his plan for their own benefit, there was reason not to support him. When the time came to decide after the Spanish conquered the last Muslim stronghold in Spain, the King and Queen were still unsure of whether or not supporting Columbus would be wise. However they did not wait long before sending a horse rider to bring Columbus back, and they came to an agreement.
  • Once Columbus gained approval for financial aid to assist his voyages, he needed to find his own crew. A respected local shipowner then agreed to be the captain for the Pinta, and the rest of the needed crew members soon joined in as well. It took about 90 men load up the ship with a year’s worth supply of necessary goods. On August 3rd, 1492 Columbus’ tiny fleet of ships sailed out of the harbor.
  • I will be your captain!
  • The fleet of ships sailed southwest towards the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa. Columbus relied on trade winds blowing west to speed up his ships across the ocean. On his journey, Christopher Columbus kept two daily records of sailing each day. One he shared with the rest of his crew, and the other he kept to himself revealing the truth about the journey. After sailing for about 10 weeks without seeing land, all hope was lost. The crew discussed about returning home so they wouldn’t starve, but Columbus was insistent and struck a bargain. The crew agreed to sail for 3 more days, but if they didn’t see land by then they would go back home. Two days later a crew member announced land.
