- Good morning class, my name is Galen Walton. I work for the up and coming Galactic Empire and i am here to show you guys about a rare breed of dog called the Karelian bear dog
- I will start with the creation of its breed in 1936 when people needed a strong and sturdy dog for protection. It originated from the Komi dog. Its coats came in many colors, including wolf gray, red, or black and tan, though modern breed standards have led to their coats being mostly black and white.
- The breed almost went extinct after WWII due to the bottle neck effect and most of the population now could be traced back to only 40 to 43 Karelian bear dogs. This means the variation of the breed is low.
- The breed's most common inherited trait is hip dysplasia which is improperly formed hips. This can also be seen in its common ancestor which is the Canis Lupus.(Shared with the C. Lupus)
- Along with the strong and sturdy body, the breed was mainly used to help humans fight off other animals like bears.(high fitness) This is what gave the breed its name.
- Though natural selection favored wolves; the Karelian bear dog was given a second chance and is now the top 10 rarest dogs in Finland.
