When the Anglo-Saxons see William's scouts have spotted them, they form a shield wall on top of Senlac Hill.
The Normans struggle to break the wall. The Saxons cut them down beneath their shields.
At one point, the Normans fear William to be dead. They begin to retreat. William stands on his horse and cries: "I live! I live! And with god's help we'll conquer yet!"Because the Normans were retreating, The English thought they were vulnerable and decided to run down the hill and attack them. The Normans turned around and cut them down. This battle tactic became known as the 'faulty retreat'. Twice the Saxons fell for this trap.
After falling for William's plan twice, the Saxon shield wall was broken. The armies were now involved in hand to hand combat. William tells his archers to fire on the opposing army to soften them up before sending in his foot soldiers and calvary. Because they were so tired, the Saxons could not counter the attacks the Normans made. The English begin to fall.
A random arrow strikes Harold above the left eye. He is instantly killed.
With the news of Harold their fearsome leader's death, the rest of the Saxon army fled and scattered.William wins!
