- Scrooge is introduced as a grumpy and selfish old banker. The sign on his counting house read Marley and Scrooge despite Marley being dead 7 years. He was too cheap to change it. He is presented as a misanthropist who lacks the ability to engage in social activity.

- Fred believes that he doesn't need to be rich to celebrate Christmas and, despite his attitude towards the holiday, invites his uncle Scrooge to join his family for Christmas. Don't be angry, uncle. Come! Dine with us tomorrow. He rudely declines.
- Later that night, arriving home Scrooge notices the knocker on his door has become Marley's face. He is frightened initially but blames it on something he ate. “This vision is probably caused by an undigested bit if beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese”. He double locks his door just in case anyway.
- He is then visited by Marley's ghost, when inside, who tells Scrooge about the chain of regrets and sins he is forced to carry forever. He warns Scrooge that Unless you change your ways the chains you will carry in your death and your wandering will be much longer than mine.
- Scrooge's goes outside to see the sky filled with ghosts like Marley's who are trapped here by the sins they committed while alive. Many had been personally known to Scrooge in their lives.
