Martin Luther was born in 1483 CE in Eisleben, Germany to Hans and Margarethe Luther and Studied law which he wasn't fond of doing and then one day a sudden storm blew, up lighting struck him to the ground and in panic he cried, "Help me Saint Anne! I'll become a monk!" He survived and in the next two weeks he withdrew from university, entered an augustinian monastery, toom his vows, and sent a message to inform his family, who were perhaps delighted to have spent their money on his education because monking was so lucrative.
Martin Luther's new interpretation of "Sola Fide" grew into a full scale conflict with the catholic church when a frier named John Tetzel came to Wittenberg, selling indulgences. Luther didn't believe that the "indulgences" of the Catholic Church people paying money to church for certificates of forgiveness would actually reduce their punishment for their sins nor make those who commited sins be able to go to heaven so in response he wrote a article called "The 95 Theses" agaisnt the catholic church's practices including the "indulgences" and dramatically nailed it to the church door, for all to see on October 31st, 1517 CE or else mailed them to the Arch Bishop it isn't clear of which of them he did or maybe he did both.
Martin Luther was a german teacher of scripture & theology,a monk, an author & writer, Augustinian monk & also priest, and a major leading figure in the Protestant Reformation
In 1505 CE, Luther was sent to rome on a diplomatic mission, and he ignored the incredible art and the developments of the Renaissance and focused on Rome's corruption with prostitutes openly soliciting on the open, filthy streets, priest who made light of their duties, hurrying through mass so fast that it seemed to mean nothing, and openly deriding Church doctrine.
In other words, Salvation comes through faith, not good works-not through prayer, or fasting, or vigils, or pilgrimages, or relics, giving to the poor, or the sacraments, or any action that a person can take.We can only have faith to merit salvation as we can't be good enough, through our own actions,to merit salvation.Sola Fide-Only Faith in Latin.
Luther was obsessed with his own sinfulness as a human being and he kept confessing, incessantly. And finally his confesor, Johann von Staupitz and other teachers sent him to the university of Wittenberg because they were tired and annoyed of him and believed he would be good at teaching scripture there do to how devout he was. Luther finally found his answer in St. Paul's Epistles, specifically in one line that said, "The just shall live by faith." (Baiton 65.).
This led to a series of debates with other men of the cloth (fellow monks), during which Luther's position became increasingly more radical.Starting from the statement that Christians were saved only through and by faith and the grace of god, for instance, Luther then upped the ante, saying that the Church's rituals didn't have the power to save souls. He then made an extremely bold statement and argued that far from being infallible, the church, and the pope made errors all of the time.He then denied that the church and the officers of it had any spiritual powers whatsoever.
He stated that the priesthood was a human invention; ad that individual christians didn't even need priest to receive the grace of god. Instead. Luther described a "Priesthood of All Believers".He had gone from a call for reformation of indulgences to a full on religious ad political revolution. In 1521 CE, Luther was called to defend his ideas before the holy roman emperor Charles V at the Imperial Diet of Worms. He managed to counter the Churches persecution of him and he soon would have a way to spread his idea rapidly throughout Germany and in Europe through the printing press which would make him influential in germany and europe.
Despite most of the people at the time were illiterate and couldn't read there still were many who could read including a lot of Priest and between 1517 and 1526 CE, two thousand editions of Luther's writings appeared. His ideas also appeared in pamphlets, and posters, and cartoons that were seen and heard about, reaching millions of readers and listeners, by town criers and broadsides nailed to door too. One of the most revolutionary of his publications was his new translation of the general Latin read Bible into German. For the first time ever non-priest could read the Bible for themselves because his bible used the german people actually spoke and quickly caught on the common people and everyone could now quote scripture and discuss its meaning. Luther died on February 18th, 1546 CE due to a r apoplectic stroke.
