- Huey P. Newton was born in Monroe, Louisiana but moved with his parents to Oakland, California during his childhood. He went to many different colleges but in Merritt College, he helped make the first African American History class

- In October 1966, he and Bobby Seale came together to found the Black Panther Party. The party believed that to get justice for black people, they may have to use violence. Seale became the Chairman and Newton became the Minister of Defense.

- Over time The BBP grew to the point that they gained international support and got Newton to be invited to visit China in 1970. China's Chairman, Mao Tse-tung welcomed Newton by raising signs supporting the BBP and criticizing U.S. imperialism.

- When Newton returned to the U.S, he was tried for some offenses which include assault and some murders. He went to Havana, Cuba for 3 years to escape prosecution but when he returned he stood trial for one more assault and murder which he was found not guilty for.

- After these charges, Eldridge Cleaver split the party in 1971 over what they should focus on. Cleaver wanted to focus on building relations with other revolutionary movements and Newton wanted to focus on serving African American communities.

- In 1989, Newton was shot in West Oakland by a member of the Black Guerilla Familly named Tyrone Robinson. BPP's relations with the Black Guerilla Family were not good 20 years before this incident. Newton's Last words were, “You can kill my body, and you can take my life but you can never kill my soul. My soul will live forever!” Before getting shot 2 more times by him.
