  • The Winter at Valley Forge (1777)
  • the winter of valley forge took place from december 19, 1777 to june 19, 1778. It served as living quarters during the winter for general washington and his men. it was an area right outside of philladelphia, here, thet would suffer a lack of supplies that were essential for a army to operate to the fulliest, and many died from sickness. although it wasnt all bad, they benifited from the arrival of an experinced ex prussian officer who taught them displines, tactics and marksmanship, because of this, when the army departed from the camp in june of 1778, they were a newly trained army worthy of fighting against the british invaders and the redcoat linemen.

  • George Washington's Quarters
  • General washingtons headquarters, also known as issac pots house, was george washingtons house during the encampment at valley forge from 1777-1778. it is belived that this house was orignally built for issac pots in 1773, who was an operator of the family grist male. the house was impresive compared to the other houses at valley forge and included things such as a fire place, a bed, chest and drawers for storage, a bed for sleep, and a kitchen for preparing personel meals. in modern day, issac pots house is still standing as a tourist attraction in valley forge national park, right next to pennsyalvania.

  • during the events of the valley forge encampment for 1777-1778, general washingtons men bult aproximitally 2000 huts to house between 12,000-14,000 men. the huts were made using logs, clay, saddle hitches and housed up to 12 men, the log cabin on the inside included wood beds and a small fireplace. all huts were built by the men themselves according to a 14 foot to 16 foot model. most huts were bult in a month or less.

  • One of the main problems faced by the soldiers in valley forge were the harsh winter weather. this evolved further due to a lack of things such as shelter, blankets, winters coats and even shoes. it is estimated that a third of washingtons men lacked footwear which lead to many cold inflicted sickness, diseases and other types of allments. with hypothermia as a main example.

  • Another huge problem that general washingtons soldiers who were encamped in valley forge is sickness and disease. Nearly 2000 men died due to sickness and disease, due to the fact that they had barely enough medicine it spread like wilffire. some common killers in valley forge were typhus, dysentary, influenza, and typhoid. most of the soldiers illnesses could be tracked back to poor hygine and sanatation, aswell as the harsh conditions that they had little to no clothing, footwear, medicine etc to deal with.

  • Training with Baron Fredrick von Steuben
  • Baron fredrick von steuben was a ex captain of the prussian army during the seven years war, he knew how to train, organize, discipline and lead soldiers, because of thi he was a great teacher for the ragtag group of soldiers serving under washington. he taught them how to march, use bayonets, discipline, tactics and how to improve their marksmanship. his merit and leadership was respected and followed by washingtons soldiers, and one of washingtons men said when he first saw von steuben it reminded him ¨of the fabled god of war¨. von steuben was also rspected by washington and would end up becoming a major general in the contintal army as the armys inspector general.
