  • London argues that nature is indifferent and people should not see it as expendable and unforgiving.
  • After the main character is seen having an attitude towards the dog as sort of rude, and acts roughly towards him, i.e., not considering his health, his state, and his warnings. The dog repeatedly tries to help the man but when he is seen not accepting it the dog does his own thing and minds his business. Later, when the man dies and the dog realizes it, instead of being concerned or calling for help, the dog immediately moves on to being concerned with his own survival and ultimately forgets about the man.
  • London’s claim that nature is indifferent and it shouldn’t be seen as expendable is proven through the character of the dog. Usually dog’s are characterized as “a man’s best friend” or very loyal companions, however in this story it is proved that a dog will treat you as it is treated.
  • After dismissing the old man's words, the main character builds himself a fire and says, any man who was a man could travel alone . after the snow puts out his first fire, the man realizes he was wrong, and he should have brought a companion, since he was not able to build himself another fire due to the freezing conditions. Eventually, the stubborn-ness of the man leads to his death and only in death does he admit he was wrong, saying You were right old fellow. You were right.
  • The main character believes he is untouchable in the face of nature and can overcome anything by relying on himself. When given advice by an old man that he should not travel alone, he mocks the man and ignores his advice.
