  • Hello! I'm Elvis Presley
  • Together, we will take you on a tour through the history of Rock and Roll!
  • And I'm Buddy Holly!
  • Elvis, you're the "King of Rock and Roll," so I'm curious: how'd you start it all?
  • Truth be told, Buddy, the rock and roll movement started long before I was born (Roots of Rock)!
  • It all started when African slaves were brought to America. They brought their music with them; Rock and Roll is a culmination of blues, bluegrass, R&B and soul, among other types of music (Roots of Rock).
  •
  • During the "great migration" in the 1950s, more African Americans moved to the North, and their music attracted white teens from Suburban areas (America Rocks and Rolls). I actually was one of those teens! I grew up listening black musicians such as Arthur Crudup and BB King (Lotter, Judah Charles). Honestly, Rock and Roll as we now call it was around for a while - I just popularized it and made it an acceptable part of culture, as I once admitted to a reporter (Newfield, Jack).
  • Everything started changing when I met Sam Phillips at Sun Records. He had produced the first rock and roll song, and had been looking for a white man who could sing with African soul and swing in order to popularize the genre- and then he met me (Berlatsky, Noah)!I came in to make a record- and he had me sing different songs until I sang "That's All Right" by Arthur Crudup (Scanlon, Laura Wolff, et al). He released my songs to the public, and the rest is history (Elvis Presley)! White families could even watch me perform my songs from television- I was that well- known (America Rocks and Rolls).
  • Plus, teens could listen to records on their own, as record players became cheaper, and they could also hang out with friends at diners and play the latest hits from black and white artists on jukeboxes , all without their parents' knowledge (Menand, Louis, et al)! Rock and roll thrived off of teenage rebellion!
  • You know Elvis, you influenced me too! It all started like this...
  • Not to mention, because my songs blended black style with white music in a way that would be palatable to white society, they helped open the door leading to a wider acceptance of and desegregation from Black music ("Elvis A Civil Rights Pioneer?"). I influenced the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, and even Abba (Troedson, David)!
