  • Hiram Revels grew up a freeman going to Indiana and Illinois to receive a better education. He later on became a minister and pastor.
  • His goal was to guide and aid slaves, fugitive or not, to freedom.
  • He was imprisoned multiple times for preaching to black people states like Missouri, where it was illegal for freed blacks to immigrate in. He then moved to Maryland.
  • After the fall of Vicksburg, he founded schools for African-American children so they could grow up learning also.
  • In the start of the Civil War, Hiram went on to serve as chaplain in the Union Army.
  • After the Emancipation Proclamation was created to allow black soldiers, Hiram Revels strived to organize and recruit African-Americans in Missouri and Maryland. He was involved in the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi
  • Later on he settled in Mississippi with his family, continuing to be a pastor. During the Reconstruction Era, Revels was elected to serve in the U.S congress and Represent the state of Mississippi.
  • He faced conflict while in Washington from Southerners. They didn't want black people being a member or let alone being involved in Congress. They used the argument that he is not a U.S citizen, therefore being unworthy to serve. Nerveless, he was voted to be in the United States senate.
  • The Congress was taken over by the Republican party who wanted more black representation. Black legislatures wanted the vacancies in the senate to be taken by Harem. Republicans saw him as an ally, causing him to be involved more in politics. Hiram Revels caught the attention of senators giving him 81 votes to fill the seats of Senate.
  • Hiram Rhodes Revels was a advocate to fix the relationship of the North and South. Throughout his life he continued to be a suppoter of black rights. He was a start of many African-Americans being involved in the government and is seen as a leader.
