  • "You know I am so glad that everything is equal now and especially the fact that no one is smarter than anyone else."
  • "Well actually I am well above normal for intelligence, so I am extraordinarily smart, however I get pierced by loud noises by the government when they think I am too smart."
  • "You do realize if I took some of the balls out of my bag, soon the government would catch on and then we would be back to competing against each other. Come on you can possibly want the dark ages back?"
  • "I am coming to you from live broadcast.  Harrison Bergeron has just escaped prison in plot to overthrow the government.  He is a genius and a very skilled athlete, thus he should be regarded as extremely dangerous."
  • "I suppose you are right George. I would really hate it if we had to back to competing against others and working hard."
  • "I mean honey can you imagine what would happen to society if people actually had to make decisions for themselves?"
  • "I would reckon that society would fall apart, completely if the government wasn't constantly dictating everything."
  • "Wow that Ballerina must be extremely beautiful and it is very evident that she is the most graceful and skilled of the others, just by looking at her handicap bags alone. The handicap bags she wears are as big as those worn by 400 pound men."
  • Kurt Vonnegut establishes through this text how infected society has become through governmental standards and media. Kurt pokes fun at the fact that people in modern society feel like they need to have their hand held in every situation of their lives. Then when something does go wrong that are blind sighted and literally forget what happened just as Hazel forgets everything in a moments notice and how George is pierced by loud sounds from the government radio. Kurt also pokes fun at this idea of equality and never having to work hard at anything. In the twenty first century people want hand outs and just as George was telling Hazel how "bad" it would be if people actually had to make decisions for themselves; thus this just shows farther into how deceptive and blind people have become. Vonnegut also is sure to point out the interesting and ironic contrast in that geniuses, athletic, and independent people are seen as the "bad ones" of society when in actuality those are the people that the government doesn't want progressing in their knowledge because there would be the unequal playing field. George is really smart, but as soon as he starts to become just a little smarter than everyone else, he is pierced by loud noises. In conclusion Vonnegut does a great job of pointing out how reliant people have truly become and how naïve these people truly are.
