- This scene shows an apathetic tone. In this scene, you see Doodle crying and leaning on the casket when brother threatened doodle by saying he'll leave Doodle by himself if he didn't touch the casket. The scene shows an apathetic tone because brother seems unfazed of how he's treating doodle
- S-Symbolism
- The author uses a negative choice of words when talking about Doodle. In the story, it says, "it was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one that was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow."(pg. 5) The reason it's a negative word choice is that he's talking about killing doodle.
- T-Theme
- "Trembling, he'd push himself up, turning first red, then soft purple, and finally collapse back on to the bed like an old worn-out doll." This is an example of imagery because it contains a simile and you can imagine Doodles face turning red and purple then collapsing and looking like a worn out doll.
- In this scene, the scarlet ibis represents doodle's death. "Doodle!" I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his. For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain.
- The theme for this story is to not let your pride take control of you. Brother only helped Doodle to walk for his own pride. "They didn't know that I did it for myself... I was ashamed of having a crippled brother."
