  • AMERICAN COLONIESThe 13 colonies were a group of settlements that became the original states of the United States of America. Nearly all the colonies were founded by the English. All were located along the East Coast of North America. The Colonies and BritainFor most of the time that the colonies were under British rule, the monarchy allowed them a great deal of freedom. Most of the colonies set up forms of self-government.
  • THE FOUNDING FATHERSThe Founding Fathers, a group of predominantly wealthy plantation owners and businessmen, united 13 disparate colonies, fought for independence from Britain, and penned a series of influential governing documents that steer the country to this day.All the Founding Fathers, including the first four U.S. presidents, at one point, considered themselves British subjects. But they revolted against the restrictive rule of King George III—outlining their grievances in the Declaration of Independence.
  • Events Leading to the RevolutionWhen Britain repealed the Stamp Act in 1766 — only a year after it had been issued — colonists celebrated in the streets, as this satirical cartoon from 1766 depicts. Something was dreadfully wrong in the American colonies. All of a sudden, after over a century and a half, Britain was imposing direct rule over colonial life. In addition to restricting westward settlement into the Ohio Valley, England was beginning to harshly enforce its trade laws.
  • DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCEThe Declaration of Independence was the first formal statement by a nation’s people asserting their right to choose their own government. When armed conflict between bands of American colonists and British soldiers began in April 1775, the Americans were ostensibly fighting only for their rights as subjects of the British crown. By the following summer, with the Revolutionary War in full swing, the movement for independence from Britain had grown, and delegates of the Continental Congress were faced with a vote on the issue.
  • CIVIL WARThe Civil War in the United States began in 1861, after decades of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states’ rights, and westward expansion. The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 caused seven southern states to secede and form the Confederate States of America; four more states soon joined them. The War Between the States, as the Civil War was also known, ended in Confederate surrender in 1865. The conflict was the costliest and deadliest war ever fought on American soil, with some 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed, millions more injured and much of the South left in ruin.
