- One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that fear and suspicion are destructive.For example when Les Goodman's car starts up,the town becomes suspicious Les.It supports the theme because the meteor and the power going off already has them on edge,so when Les's car turned on while he wasn't in it their suspicion leads to them think of reasons why he could be the alien.Another example could be when Charlie shot Pete van horn because he was afraid that he was the alien.He was so scared he didn't have time to think and acted on fear;not knowing that Pete Van Horn was the dark figure and taking his life.The last example is that the town kept trying to find someone to suspect.The town was trying to find a scapegoat to take the blame off their self .Their fear caused them to become violent with each other and turned on their friends.Not only did they destroy their friendships they destroyed their town by throwing rocks and shooting at each other.In conclusion this shows that when when people are put in a situation where they're scared and suspicious they will turn on you and do what ever it takes to get the suspicion off their self ; even if it means destroying your friendship and life.
