In Tamaki Makaurau, there were Patupairehe, also known as fairy people that were living there. Not all of them were on good terms so they separated into two different tribes. The two tribes lived on the opposites of the land, one in the Waitakere forest on the west coast and the latter lived in the Hunua Forest in the south

Often, the children from both tribes would sneak out and would run to the opposing tribes area. They would then return with something from the area as evidence that they had been there.

The next night, when the children went to play again, as they were coming back, Hui did not follow. The children were very anxious as they had lost Hui and didn't know what to do.

Once Waitakere found out his son was lost, he was enraged. He summoned a war party and just as they were going begin their war cry, They saw two figures running towards them. It was Hui holding hands with a young women

The Hunua tribe was furious when they found out their princess was missing and they were even angrier when they found out that she was with the son of Waitakere. A party was then gathered to deal with the Waitakere patupaiarehe and retrieve Wairere

However, Waitakere had anticipated them. As they came closer, the Waitakere tohunga, reached far into the earth and withdrew some of the magic hidden there. Using this, he constructed the deadliest of spells and casted it upon the Hunua Patupaiarehe.Some fell but still some continued to march towards the Waitakere Patupaiarehe. He reached under ground for the second time to cast spells at the approaching party. Charms this time were effective and the Hunua Patupaiarehe slumped lifeless to the ground one by one.

Suddenly, from the ground, Mataaho came up in fumes and so antagonized by Tohunga for taking magic without his permission. He woke his brother; Ruaumoko , the god of earthquakes and volcanoes, and their combined anger opened a hole in the Earth. Tohunga fell into the hole and he was melted into the earth. He became a part if the magic he had already summoned.All the other Waitakere Patupaiarehe ran for their lives but Ruaumoko and Mataahos anger was too powerful for them. Rocks were thrown into the air and melted before they struck the ground, while dense clouds of smoke obscured the light. They could not run away.

Many years later, two Patupaiarehe sat on top a the cliff looking over the volcanic field.Tāmaki Makaurau's volcanoes still bear the scars of Wairere and Hui's foolishness, though they have long since entered the underworld.
