  • Britians salt tax was imposed on India in 1882. This prohibited Indians from collecting, selling, or dealing with salt. Salt is a large part of the diet in a average Indian, this act effected all of India econmimically and just the people overall. Britian would heavily tax this salt causing large problems in the average diet and how the people would spend their money.

  • While living in South Africa, Gandhi fought for the civil rights of Indians for over a decade. In 1915 Gandhi returned to his home country India and began to fight for India's independence from Britain.
  • Gandhi started the Salt March with a letter in 1930 stating that he would break the Salt Laws within ten days. Ten days later, Gahndi set out on a religious trek where several dozen followers marched 240 miles. In April, when he arrived, he was accompanied by tens of thousands of followers. Gandhi planned to make salt with all these people, and soon, civil disobedience broke out, involving millions in India. On May 5th, Gandhi was arrested, but his followers continued his message. Gandhi was released in 1931. This march fueled Satyagraha over India leading to indias independence in 1947.
