This is an example of personification because he gave the words fain, hell, flames human characteristics. He seems as if he was trying to say that whoever sins then they would go to hell due to them making God angry.
"..the devil is waiting for them, hell is gapping for them, the flames gather and flash about them and would fain lay hold on them and swallow them up...", Edwards 197.
Edwards once said, "..the world of misery, the lake of burning brimstone, is extended abroad, under you. There is a dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God..." 197. This would be more of the illustration of the other example of symbolism. This would be illustrating there is play for whoever doesn't stand by God.
The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked...", Edwards 199.
This is would be example of symbolism due to using " the spider of put of hell." The spider is represented as humans that does stand by God then they go to hell where the devil lives at.
"The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains..", Edward 198.
This was an example of a metaphor. He was using metaphor by using the comparing a bent arrow how much patience he has before exploding.
"...peace and safety: now they see, that those things on which they depended for peace and safety, were nothing but thin air and empty shadows...",Edwards 199.
Edwards would be repetitive to make sure that he leads back to whatever the topic was. Just like the him of "peace and safety" to remind what the meaning of "peace and safety".
Edwards said, "the devils watch them; they are ever by them at their right hand; they stand waiting for them, like greedy hungry lions that see their prey, and expect to have it...", 194. This was an example of simile due to how he was comparing how they are watching like they were lions.
