"Hey Keira...you should see how good your friend, Sydney, is at diving."
Sydney does diving? Hmm
"Wow she looks really good. That actually looks fun!"
"Yes, Hello? My daughter has been interested in diving. Is there any way she can join the team?"
The Phone Call
"Yes of course! I know a place in Stockton that might let you dive. Let's call."
"Yes! she can start tomorrow if that works for you!"
"Hey mom! I think I want to try diving. Can you see if there is anywhere near us that I can dive at?"
Time for practice (the next day)
Wow! What a cool place! But.. I am a little nervous.
"Hi I am here to try diving. Are you the coach?"
"Yes! Hi you must be Keira! I am Coach Robert and I would like to show you some simple diving forms."
"I hear you did gymnastics?" A lot of what we do relates to that sport. I think it will help with form."
I wonder what place I will get...I think I did okay.
My mom called me over to watch a video of a girl I knew that was trying diving as a sport. Her name was Sydney, and she was a former gymnast who decided to try diving.
(One Month Later) First Dive Meet
I asked my mom if she could find out if there were any dive locations near me. She found a coach named Robert at Delta Valley Diving. I was very excited when he said that I could start my first day the next day.
Awards
"Good job ladies!"
Coach Robert was short and wearing a Giants ball cap. I was surprised at how friendly he was. He explained how to dive correctly by using terms I knew about shapes and form from gymnastics.
I won!
There is no way I just won! I have only been diving for a month! This is overwhelming!
A month after my first practice, I had my first dive meet. We were at Capital Diving, a place in Sacramento. After competing a long couple of hours, it was almost time for a small awards ceremony. My two friends and I waited anxiously.
Guys I am so excited for awards!! We all did amazing!
Yeah same... I wonder when they start.
Afterwards, they had a small awards ceremony. They called the names in reverse order, and I kept not hearing my name, and I thought I wasn't going to place. As soon as they called 4th place, my coach said, "Good job, ladies" before they even announced the rest of the places.
What? Did we just win or did I not place at all?
I did not think I was going to even place, until they called my name last. I had won first place after only diving for a month, and at my first meet. I won two out of my three events. When they called my name I was so proud of myself.
