- On November 3, 1957 a group of soviet scientists hunddle around a strange, metal object. Inside the object was a little brown and white dog with a curly tail.
- When a Lika was about three years old, she and several other dogs were captured and brought to the space research center. They hand been selected to participate in the space program because they were used to though conditions. Scientist worked with the dogs.
- Some dogs were too weak or too nervous to stay in the training program, but not Laika. During her training, Laika was spun around, turned upside down, and taught to wear a spacial suit.
- Laika loved people and was always happy to do what they wanted. Because of her strength and her willingness to learn, Laika was chosen from all the dogs in her training group to become the words first real astronaut.
- On october 31, 1957, Laika was put into a satellite called Sputnik 2. Laika stayed in the satellite while it was still on the ground for three days, so she could get used to it.
- On November 3, while the whole world waited, Sputnik 2 blasted off into space. Laika became the first living thing to orbit the eart. The world was amazed.
- Sputnik 2 re-entered the Earths atmosphere, but, sadly, Laika had died in space. Today there is a statue honoring Laika in Moscow. We have Laika to thanks for this- the little dog with the curly tail who went from the streets to the stars.
