- The cause of the compromise of 1850 was about slavery. The north did not want slaves. But the south wanted slaves. Then Henry Clay settled many outstanding issues with slavery,
- Brooks Sumners Affair
- I will not let Sumner get away with making fun of Burlter
- Uncle Toms cabin began to move more and more Northerners to consider ending slavery, which outraged slave owners because they wanted to keep the slaves.
- Dred Scott Decision
- No more slaves in Kansas and Nebraska
- I will free slaves and seize the federal arsenal at Harper Ferry VA
- Kansas turns into a battle ground in the fight for its rights to own slaves. Abolitionist and pro-slavery men formed their own government
- John Brown and Harpers Ferry
- I will take back the federal arsenal and try and publicly hang John Brown.
- Sumner delivered a fiery speech against slavery to congress. Sumner was imitating Butler during the speech. Butlers cousin heard that he was making fun of butler so he caned him. Sumner never recovered and suffered from chronic pain.
- Dred Scotts master died so he sues for his freedom.Got denied because he was not a citizen because he was black and had no right to file a suit. Scotts decision makes attempts to keep slavery out of Kansas and nebraska as unconstitutional denying southerners the right to own slaves violated the constitutional
- Tempers are rising John Brown returns in 1859 Brown and about 20 men freed slaves to seize the federal arsenal at Harper Ferry Virgina. Federal troops led by general Lee killed 10 of Browns men and take back the arsenal. Brown is tried and publicly hanged . In 1860 the United Stated elected Abraham Lincoln as our 19 president which he was assassinated because he wanted to get rid of slavery
