- In the story Patroclus, who is the son of a king, gets exiled after killing his childhood acquaintance, Clysonymus, who had tried to take his prized dice. The boy's family is angry and orders death or exilement for Patroclus. He gets exiled to Phtia, where he is one of many foster children.
- When Patroclus arrives at Phtia, the king is out of town, so he has to greet the prince instead. The prince is Achilles. He is destined to be the "best warrior." He is good at everything and charms everyone. Although everyone wants to be his friend, Achilles chooses Patroclus to be his Therapon: a special companion to a prince.

- Achilles is the son of Thetis, a sea nymph with frightening powers and disdain for mortals. Thetis has reluctantly allowed Achilles to be raised by his mortal king father, but she keeps a close eye on him and there is always the threat that she might take Achilles away to live under the sea. She prophecies that Patroclus will die soon and that Achilles will become the greatest warrior ever.
- Achilles goes to train in a rose quartz cave with Chiron. Chiron is a centaur, half man half horse. He trains heros. Patroclus follows them to their cave and gets permission to stay with them. They spend years training.
- Every young man who is able to fight, especially a prince, is supposed to fight against Troy because they took an oath, otherwise they lose all of their honor. Achilles's mother takes him to Scyros and makes him pretend to be a girl. Lycomedes, the king of Scyros, is angry because he is caught between all the kings of Greece and Thetis.
- While the Greeks are fighting Troy, they camped outside of Troy for a very long time. Patroclus was very worried for Achilles, because of his prophecy. As time goes on, Achilles starts to get very cocky and rude. Patroclus starts to care about Briseis more than Achilles.
