  • Madison vs Marbury was a U.S. Supreme Court case that established the principal of the judicial review in the United States. That means that American courts have the power to strike down laws and statutes that they find to violate the Constitution of the United States. Madison won the case in a 4-0 decision. It was ruled illegal, but the supreme court had no power above Madison. This Case established the power of judicial review. The U.S. Supreme Court and lower federal courts respect with respect to the constitution and eventually for parallel state courts with respect to the constitution.

  • On October 11th 1944, a Japanese- American man living in the United States was arrested for going against an executive order. The executive order was that all Japanese- Americans on the west coast were to relocate for the safety of the United States. This order was signed just two months after the Pearl Harbor attack. Korematsu took the case to the Upremem court, which when on Dec. 18 1944, it was decided that the executive order was valid and Korematsu wasn't obeying the order. The significance of this case was to maintain safety for our country by relocating any threat opposed to the U.S.

  • On December 9 1952, it was argued in the Supreme Court that public schools segregated by race goes against the 14th amendment. On May 17th, 1954, the justices deemed that the School systems were in fact going against the 14th amendment. The significance of this case was to bring justice to the racism that was present during these tough times.

  • On jan 15 1963 it was argued that Earl Gideon was charged with breaking and entering by Florida State law. Gideon showed up to court without a lawyer, demanding that they appoint him with one. Yet, they cannot unless it is a capital case. He was sent to 5 years in prison where he eventually reached the supreme court. Gideon filed a habits corpus pension, arguing that the trials courts decision violated his constitutional right to be represented by council. The Supreme Court said that it violated his rights and should've been appointed a lawyer. The significance of this case was to instill that all convicted people should be appointed a lawyer.

  • On march 29th 1969 it was argued that Griswold, a gynecologist from Yale, was guilty for trying to go against the law of selling any contraceptivess to the public. He was arrested for this and on June 7, 1965, he was deemed not guilty since the courts were going against the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment. The significance of this case was that it marked the era of change for sexual and reproductive rights in the U.S.

  • It was argued on Feb 28 1966 that Ernesto Miranda was found guilty on multiple charges including kidnapping and rape. He was not read his rights before interrogation started. Miranda was found guilty but on his appeal to the supreme court he was said it went against the 5th amendment since he was not aware of having n attorney with him during interrogation. On June 13 1966 The Supreme Court had a 5-4 majority vote concluding that it went against the 5th amendment. This case is significant because it shows that the defendant needs to be read his rights before any sort of interrogation.
