- To not to look poor among other the women at the ball, Mathilde Losiel desired to have at least one jewelry to wear along with her new dress. So, Mathilde visits Mme. Forestier, a friend to borrow a necklace.

- "What! Are you sure you didn't leave it in the palace?"
- "I-I've lost Mme. Forestier's necklace!"
- The day that the ball at the Ministry had arrived, Mathilde looked stunning compared to all the other guests. All her effort had finally paid off and was able to have a night of a luxurious life that she constantly dreamed.
- After ball was near it's ending, she once again felt self-conscious of being remarked by the other women due to the common wrap she wore. Feeling this, she rushed down the stairs to leave with her husband.
- However, when they arrived home, Mme. Loisel checked her reflection in the mirror to only find that Mme. Forestier's necklace was gone. She had lost the necklace!
