  • How fast were the cars going when they SMASHED into eachother?
  • FINDINGS: the estimated speed given was affected by the verb used. The verb implied information about the speed, affecting participants memory of the accident! WOW
  • Procedure 1- 45 American students were showed 7 films of traffic accidents (5-30 seconds long) that were presented in a random order to each of the 5 groups they were separated into.
  • After watching the film the students were asked to describe what they had seen as if they were eyewitnesses. Questions such as: 'How fast were the cars going when they smashed/ collided/ bumped/ hit each other. (IV= wording DV=speed)
  • How fast were the cars going when they hit each other?
  • Did I see broken glass?
  • Where's my question?
  • When 'smashed' was used, participants thought the cars were going faster compared to when the verb 'hit' was used with other participants. Highest= 40.8mph- smashedLowest=31.8mph- contacted
  • The DV was measured at this point!
  • PROCEDURE 2- A 1 minute film of a car driving featuring 4 seconds of a multiple car accident was shown to 150 students who were then asked questions regarding what they saw. (IV= type of question asked)
  • Grouped in 3's of 50s, 1 group was asked 'How fast the cars were going when they hit each other?' another 50 was asked '...smashed into each other?' & the other 50 weren't asked anything- control group. 1 week later (without seeing the video) they was asked whether they'd seen broken glass- no broken glass in original film!
  • FINDINGS: Participants who were asked how fast the cars were going when they 'SMASHED' were more likely to report seeing broken glass
