Close your eyes and think to yourself what it was like to have the freedom from your parents the first time at college
Staying up as late as you want?
Was it eating all the food at the buffet styled dining hall?
Eating cookout at 2 am after a long night of studying?
Or was it NO CURFEW?
Maybe you had something different in mind.
That's okay. Just get the gist of many 'freedoms' of an incoming freshman
However, having all these freedoms may sound great, it can also be very harmful, especially for women
Why me?!
It is because woman try to create identities through pictures that they see
Women lose their sport
We all know it as the Freshmen 15
You can't forget about the all you can eat meal plan
Schedule to busy for physical activity
And just like that you have gained weight.
But why is it more important for women to keep a slimmer figure than males?
In Teen magazine 25% of girls think that the media tries to create what they look like
I first surveyed freshman girls in the dining hall (anonymous survey)
3. Are you comfortable with your own body and the way you look? Why or why not?
1. Have you gained weight since you have been at college?
2. If you have gained weight, why do you think you have?
I asked 3 specefic questions:
Q3 "I gained almost 4 pounds the first 2 months since I have been here. I wasn't comfortable in my own skin, I have dropped that weight, but I am still insecure about my body."
"I think one of the main reasons I am insecure is because of what society tells me to look like"
"I have gained weight and I am self-conscious"
"Instagram shows me the way I SHOULD look"
"Social Media is powerful and influences our lives"
Q1 & Q2"I have gained weight since I have been here. I feel that eating a buffet style meal everyday is why I have gained weight."
I surveyed the freshmen guys because I was curious as to why they had perceived thoughts as to how a woman should look.
2. Do you think the media distorts your view on the way women look?
1. Do you think a woman should be a certain size?
2. "they have brainwashed guys minds to think every girl will look like that.”
1. & 2."Yes, I have a certain idea that a girl should look because the media broadcasts models and other girls that are skinny"
1. & 2. "I have a fixed mindset as to what a girl looks like because of the way they advertise commercials in such a sexual way."
"I'd rather not answer this one"
which the models that you see on social media weigh 23% less than a normal woman weighs.
Media distorts images and models bodies to make them smaller than what they are.
Above Media's Standard Convention
"Being a woman in America’s media-obsessed culture also means living up to the beauty standard that advertisers set in place"
