There are several misconceptions about schizophrenia, such as it being a multiple personality disorder or that people with schizophrenia end up homeless or hospitalized. Several mental health research organizations have proven these incorrect, such as the National Institute of Mental Health and the American Psychiatric Association.One of the worst misconceptions is that people with schizophrenia as dangerous or crazy, as they are more prone to violence.
This one is totally wrong. Research by the National Institute of Mental Health concludes that "Overall, people with schizophrenia are more likely than those without the illness to be harmed by others. For people with schizophrenia, the risk of self-harm and of violence to others is greatest when the illness is untreated." With this, they state that it is important to help people who are showing symptoms to get treatment as quickly as possible.
