In June of 1793, the Jacobins seized control of the National Convection and started the 10 month-long Reign of Terror in which suspected enemies of the Revolution were executed via guillotine. 17,000 were officially tried and executed.
The Girondins who survived the Regin of Terror approved France´s first bicameral legislature. The protests were quickly shut down by Napolean Bonaparte.
The Directory which held the executive power was riddled with corruption for 4 years and the military generals had most of the power.
Napolean staged a coup d´état on November 9, 1799.
The coup essentially ended the French Revolution.
Napolean becomes consul for life in 1799 and later becomes emperor in 1804.
