- During the phallic stage the child's interest focuses on their opposite sex parent,this caused conflict between Hans and his father as he feared his father will find out and punish him by castrating

- Aim & method
- Method - longitudinal case study - Freud used clinical case study to investigate Hans' phobia. The case study was carried out by his father who supported Freud who only met the boy once. Little Hans was observed at home by his father who noticed and recorded his observations in everyday activities and passed on the info to Freud to gather evidence to support his theories.
- Aim - report findings of the treatment of a 5 yr old boy for his fear of horses.
- When Hans was 3 1/2 his baby sister was born which caused separation from him and his mother.
