- Jefferson was curious about the land of the west and he bought the Louisiana Territory in 1803 for $15 million! It doubled the size of the United States. It was a good deal.

- After Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory for $15 million, he sent Lewis to lead an expedition to explore the Louisiana Territory. They waited until the harsh winter was over and closed their expedition in March of 1806.

- In the Battle of Little Bighorn, the American troops were outnumbered, and everyone was killed. The law required all Native Americans east of the Mississippi to move to other places reserved for them. President Andrew Jackson demanded the U.S. Army to move the Cherokee off their lands by threatening with a gun in 1838.
- The Gold Rush
- Texan settlers decided to fight for their Independence from Mexico and made an army. This time they did not fail and defeated the Mexicans and captured their president.
- The Oregon Trail was a pathway thatwas from east to west. The people who first walked the Oregon Trail got cholera from eating or drinking infected water or food.

- In 1848, James Marshall, a person who made carpets, found a bit of gold in the American River near John Sutter's sawmill. On December 5, 1848, President James K. Polk confirmed the discovery of some gold in his State of the Union label.
