The husband, Arveragus, leaves his wife Dorigen in France that lives close to the seaside town of Pedmark, to go to Britain in pursuit of honor and fame.

I'll make you a deal
Dorigen is pursued by Aurelius, a squire, even if she doesn't want to. Dorigen makes the impetuous claim that if he can somehow clear the Brittany coast of all the rocks, she might fall in love with him.

Conflict Rises
However, Dorigen becomes concerned about the hazardous rocks near the shore when Arveragus leaves to engage in combat. She fears that when he returns home, they will destroy his ship.

The Bargain
Aurelius takes it seriously, even though it was intended as a joke. He gets a magician to make the pebbles vanish because he is so in love. Dorigen is now forced to keep a promise she never imagined would be significant.

Climax
Aurelius manages to secure the services of a magician-scholar, who is taking pity on the young man, for the princely sum of a thousand pounds agrees to use his powers to make the rocks vanish

Falling Action
Arveragus returns home safely. Dorigen explains her moral predicament to her husband who calmly says that in good conscience she must go and keep her promise to Aurelius to maintain her honor.

Resolution
A deal is a deal
When Aurelius hears from a distraught Dorigen that Arveragus has told her to fulfill her promise, he releases Dorigen from her oath. The magician-scholar is so moved by Aurelius' story that he cancels the large debt that Aurelius owes him.

The moral of the story
Aurelius understands that true love sometimes means letting go, even when it is painful. What seems like the right thing to do isn’t always the easiest.
