The 10 Commandments
Israelites travel to The Promised Land - Canaan
When the Israelites left Egypt God guided them with a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. He split The Red Sea in two parts so they could walk to safety. The journey from Egypt to the Promised Land was hard, the Israelites didn't know where to find food or water, 3 days after leaving Egypt they started complaining. Moses asked The Lord to help, he left flakes of food, called manna. He told them to eat it all and not to save any. Some saved a little, the next morning it turned to maggots. God gave new manna every day for 6 days, on the 6th day he told them to gather enough for 2 days so they had a day to rest, which is called a Sabath. They kept travelling eating new manna every day and getting a Sabath every week. God told Moses to strike a rock with his staff and water came gushing out. They travelled for 40 years with God providing food and water.
Israel worshipping Idols and the time of Judges
When the Israelites arrived at the promised land they were meant to worship and obey God. Unfortunately they did not and instead worshipped their own Idols. (Idols of Baal and Astarte) They did all sorts of sinful things. God responded by letting other nations raid Israel to steal their crops and possesions. The lord then felt sorry of the Israelites and sent Judges to help rescue them. The judges helped rescue them from their enemies. After the Israelites were saved they became more sinful and more stubborn and continued to worship other god and the religions of others.
The time of the Kings
Prophets
"Return to God, there will be destructive consequences ahead"
Invasion of Promised Land
Enemies invaded and conquered Israel and Judah. Gods people were forced out of the promised land and many taken to be slaves once again. The Israelites lost everything and were scattered across many lands. This time was known as Exile.
Waiting for the Messiah
God gave Israel a 'human" King. The King of Israel was King David. God promised David, v12-16 " I will choose one of your sons to rule your kingdom, and when you reach the end of your life and are buried in the tomb of your ancestors I will make him a strong ruler and no-one will take his Kingdom away from him. I will be his father and he will be my son. When he does wrong I will see that he is corrected. I will make sure that one of your descendants will always will always be king"
Prophet Malakai and Isaiah pointed to the future and a coming King, a Messiah one who would fully restore Israel and bring a new kingdom of peace, so the Jewish people waited and hoped. God did not speak through the prophets again for 400 years.
