- England wanted to set up colonies in the Americas. England would benefit from lumber and other raw materials. In 1584, Queen Elizabeth told Walter Raleigh to set up a colony in North America. A year later Raleigh sent 100 colonists to Roanoke Island, Virginia.
- The colonists left back to England when they ran out of supplies In 1587 John White led another group of settlers. They also ran low on supplies and were attacked by the native Americans. White went back to England for supplies. When he returned three years later, everyone was gone.
