The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a plan that separated the Louisiana Purchase into Kansas and Nebraska. This allowed the people to choose if they wanted to be part of a free or enslaved territory. Even though the Northerners didn't want this plan to happen, the Southerners helped sign the proposal into law.
Stephen Douglas wanted to create a railroad that ran through Chicago, but in order to do this, he would have to change the remaining land from the Louisiana Purchase into federal land. The Southerners had other plans. They disagreed with Douglas' proposal and wanted the railroad to go through New Orleans, Texas, New Mexico, and Southern California. They later compromised by changing the new territory into enslaved land.
Franklin Pierce was the politician the delegates turned to after the Democrats wouldn't win the majority of the votes. Pierce won over the Southerners by promising the fact he would honor the Fugitive Slave Act and the Compromise of 1850. Pierce later won the election against the Whigs and the Whigs took it as a major defeat.
