Provider Shortages

- John lives in Utah.
- This is John
- Recently John hasn't been feeling too well.
- He's started having terrible headaches....
- ....started experiencing sudden shortness of breaths....
- ...started having trouble falling asleep at night...
- ...started having stomach pains...
- Why aren't you eating?
- I'm just not hungry today.
- ...and even started experiencing chest pains.
- Eventually, John decided enough was enough. He was tired of feeling this way.
- John decided to make a doctor's appointment to figure out what the root of his symptoms were.
- Blah, blah, blah, 5 WEEKS, blah, blah
- Unfortunately, due to the healthcare provider shortage in Utah, John was forced to wait 5 weeks to meet with a doctor as it was the soonest appointment available.
- 5 WEEKS LATER...
- The day finally came and John was now at his appointment. However, over the course of these 5 weeks John's symptoms seemed to disappear.
- What brings you here today? What seems to be the problem?
- Well a couple weeks ago I would get these terrible head and stomach pains. I'd also get random chest pains and experience shortness of breath.
- Are you still experiencing these symptoms now?
- No
- Are you currently experiencing any other symptoms you'd like to address?
- No
- I'm a bit confused, what brings you here today then?
- Well, I made my appointment when I was experiencing these symptoms, but this was the earliest appointment you had.
- And since I waited so long for my appointment, you have to listen to me talk about the symptoms I had now.

- I wonder if I can slowly walk out of here without him noticing.
- Despite Utah's acclaimed healthcare system, AAMC has ranked Utah 49th in the nation for access to primary care. This is highly due to the provider shortage Utah is currently facing.

- Luckily for John, his symptoms seemed to disappear however, this is not always the case. Often times during waiting times between appointments, symptoms will continue to progress.
- According to Deseret News, “Utah must more than double its current workforce over the next 15 years to keep up with population growth and closer to the national average.”
- The only way to solve these provider shortages is to help our future doctors on their paths to becoming doctors. We need to fully support them and give them incentives for becoming doctors. A great way to do this is by funding more scholarships for medical school. We also need to make it less of a competitive field of study by making sure there is a slot open in medical school for every student pursing this study. By making medical school more accessible, more students will be inclined to purse such a career. Even just by supporting our students, we can make them feel like the rigorous career they're chasing is something in the grasp of their hands.
