HI, I'm Mr. Cheggs. I will be explaining on how I evolved to be able to survive in the freezing cold! I do this by creating my own anti-freeze.
stimulus&(response)
When I first start to feel the cold I find a good place to stay for 2 or so months
Genitic Code
Now that I'm starting to freeze I have to create my own anti-freeze to stay alive!
The wood frog has evolved in a way that is very unique. They have evolved to survive for 8 months at a time completely frozen. The wood frog had adapted to the cold environment by creating its own anit-freeze.
Homeostasis
The wood frog's blood begins to freeze, so the liver responds to this by working extra hard to make glucose to try and prevent dehydration.
Growth&(development)/Cells
This mixed with urine in the frog's bloodstream creates anti-freeze. This prevents the cells from losing too much water and dying.
Reproduction/Metabolism
Well I'm off to get get some food and reproduce.
The wood frog maintains this process to survive but is almost frozen. A whole 2/3 of the frog's body freezes.
I am now completely frozen and all of my organs and cells are not working right now...
The wood frog begins to thaw after 8 months. Water flows back into my cells, my red blood cells start moving and my heart starts to beat again and I am now just as I am when I froze.
Now that the sun is shining I begin to thaw, my body produces anti-freeze and my organs begin to work again!
2 days after thawing the wood frog goes to look for a mate, some food, and pee.
