Thomas Jefferson wanted to explore the land in the west. He wanted to make it a part of America. So he sent James Monroe to Napoleon of France to persuade him to make a deal to buy the Port of New Orleans. Dangers of the Oregon trail
When white settlers were moving west, they wanted to live in the place that the Native Americans were living in. So the government made them move past the Mississippi River. They marched them there. They said the Lakota could stay, but when they found gold where the Lakota lived, they forced them out. The Lakota raged, and the rage became the battle of Little Bighorn.

Many Americans moved to Texas for many reasons. When they got there, the Mexican president, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, didn't like having too many Americans settled in Texas. so he said no more people could come. The Americans made a rebellion, and they fought a war against Mexico at the Alamo. Santa Anna was captured, and he made Texas a free country in trade for his freedom.
The Oregon Trail was the trail that the people took when moving west. A disease called Cholera killed many people. It was the deadliest danger there was along the Oregon Trail. People also had the chance of being frozen during bad weather and being trampled by a wagon.
In California, a carpenter named James Marshall found a tiny piece of gold in the American River. The owner of the sawmill he used, John Sutter, tried to keep the gold a secret. But news got out soon enough. Soon, everyone flocked to California to get rich. After a year, all the easy to find gold was taken. Not every miner even found a small nugget! At the end, the gold rush was a disaster for the most.
