- In life I was your partner, Jacob Marley
- I wear the chain I forged in life.
- Scrooge was a 'tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, miserable and lonely. He didn't feel any need to change.
- Scrooge's nephew is the opposite of Scrooge - he loves Christmas, he is kind and jolly. However, Scrooge hates Christmas, he is lonely and miserable.
- I am the Ghost of Christmas Past
- Marley's ghost comes to visit Scrooge to warn him about how he must change. Scrooge can't believe it and says that the supernatural events are due to 'an undigested bit of beef'.
- Poor Boy!
- Scrooge was distressed by what he had seen, Marley on the door knocker, the bells ringing, and Marley the Ghost so he fell asleep upon the instant.
- The clock bell sounded at the hour of one. A light flashed in the room; it was the Ghost of Christmas Past. This ghost had 'child's proportions' and 'held a branch of fresh holly in its hand'
- Scrooge was taken by the ghost to his childhood school. He realised how lonely he was during his school years. Scrooge feels sad as he feels bad for a carol singer who came to his door last night, and wishes he would have given them some money.
