My name is Masabumi Hosono. I was on board the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. I was a civil servant working for Japan.
On board the ship I was ticketed as 2nd Class . This was like the middle class usually tourists and professors. My ticket cost about $690.
I was travelling all alone and I was the only Japanese passenger on board. I ate by myself in the dining room.
I had been working in Russia studying their railroad system and took the Titanic on my way home.
On board I hoped to relax and eat good food and maybe read or take a walk. I'm hoping to see the dog show.
Most days I ate good meals, read in the library, and talked in the smoke room. I played shuffleboard too.
"When the ship hit the iceberg, there was so much confusion and the officers thought women and children should be saved first. Because I was a 2nd class passenger, I should have made it to the life boats but because I was Japanese they thought I was 3rd class or steerage and I was turned away. I was a 42 year old man so that also hurt my chances of being saved."
"I was sleeping and didn't know what was happening. They woke me and told me to put on my life jacket. When I realized what was happening, I panicked. I became depressed and desperate and thought of my family and I knew I didn't want to die. I tried to make it to the life boats but was turned away until my 3rd try. I was so scared and confused. I was hoping the ship wouldn't sink. Everyone thought the ship was unsinkable."
