At a young age, my parents made me play basketball on a church team. I was naturally skilled at basketball and the church league wasn’t competitive so I usually never practiced outside of team practice.
Meeting a Mentor
I got invited to tryout for the San Jose Zebras, which was a Club basketball team. This is how I started to play competitive basketball.
Crossing the First Threshold
Zebras accepted me to play for the team. This made me realize that I now had to dedicate myself to improve my basketball skills and that I had a role to fill on my team.
My coach's name was Aaron Higashi and I immediately connected with him. He taught me the basic skills I needed to succeed in the competitive league. My team was not very good at the beginning but he was the one that taught us to play as a team.
Joining a competitive team meant that I had to work hard and be fully committed to basketball. At that age, I liked basketball but I truly didn't love to play it. I was the starting point guard for my team, but I feared that would change.
