The Pakeha wanted to make a road, but did not ask the Maori.
But thats so unfair, they didn't even ask us
This happend in 1881..... during this time the people of Parihka began to protest about the Government selling Maorii land to Pakeha settlers.
Did you know that our farm will soon be a road?
The Pakeha dug up the Maori's farms and flattend them out to make roads.
Look what they have done to our land!
They have dug it all up and made it all flat
The Iwi of Parihaka were pasive ressiting the Europeans. They wanted to work together not be taken over. The leaders/cheifs encuraged thier people to not fight back.
The maori were not happy with the Pakeha so they dug up the flat land.
Great idea!
They protested by removing survey pegs, building fences that have been taken down to make way for new roads and ploughing up the Maori land being used by Paakeha farmers.
Lets dig up the flat land
