  • Atomic Theory ComicBy Jacob De Vela
  • I'm joking! The professor said he would be teaching us about the atom and some scientists later.
  • Hey Jack! Are you ready for the science test today?
  • WHAT??! WE HAVE A TEST TODAY?
  • You better be..
  • In Science Class...
  • Today we will be going over the scientists who have contributed to today's understanding of the atomic theory.
  • Hello class! As you all should already know, my name is Mr. Povey!
  • Democritus was known as a "laughing philosopher" who lived between 460 BC and 370 BC. He was one of the two founders of ancient atomic theory alongside Leucippus. 1
  • He and Leucippus were the first people to suggest that matter is made up extremely small particles called atoms.
  • Let's begin! Now, If we were to travel back hundreds, even thousands of years, it would bring us to one person. Democritus!
  • This brings us to his so-called "cheese" experiment. He took a piece of cheese and kept cutting it until it was uncuttable. He thought that there would be a point when it would reach this stage and these uncuttable pieces were called atomos, meaning "uncuttbale" in Greek.
  • 1Democritus theorized that all material bodies and everything in the universe are made up of indivisibly small "atoms". With this theory, he wondered what would happen if you cut a chunk of matter into smaller and smaller pieces.
  • Aristotle rejected his atomic theory because he thought Democritus was supposing that the sequence of colliding atoms has no beginning, which provided no explanation for the existence of atomic motion.
  • Aristotle also didn't think that atoms moved through empty spaces because he didn't think that empty spaces existed and that all matter only consisted of the four basic elements, earth, air, water, and fire.
  • This may seem like this went in a smooth fashion, but this was quickly criticized by Aristotle, another philosopher.
