Indian cuisine is very popular today. There are many claims that today's Indian dishes are authentic so I am going to compare the authentic Goan Vindaloo recipe with 5 other recipes from different regions to see if they are in fact authentic.
The first comparison was between the authentic Goan Vindaloo and a recipe that claimed to be authentic and it is called North American Goan Pork Vindaloo.
Most of the ingredients were the same as the original but several more spices were included in this recipe. Overall it is close to its original roots.
It only has a few of the original ingredients; the majority are from the British-Indo recipe from 1888 which reflects the impact that the British had on Indian cuisine.
The next comparison was a British version called Lamb Vindaloo.
The majority of ingredients are not comparable to the authentic Goan Vindaloo recipe. This recipe is more of a British-Indo fusion of a British stew and a Indian curry. Let's hop on over to the next comparison!
G'day the next recipe I compared was an Australian version called Roo Vindaloo.
The next comparison is with a recipe from Trinadad and Tobago called Trini Garlic Pork.
Even though it uses similar ingredients the outcome is very different. Instead of a curry sauce the meat is marinated and fried.
The last comparison is an American recipe called Lamb Vindaloo Curry.
Some of the ingredients in this version were similar but it definitely had a more British influence with the addition of potatoes and tomatoes.
After comparing the 5 modern Vindaloo recipes, it is obvious that they are not authentic recipes. Even though all contain some of the original ingredients each one is a fusion of another culture.
