A man by the name of Christopher Columbus was a sailor with a need for exploration, specifically a desire to sail west, though many kingdoms didn't want to fund his trip because they saw it as a shady idea to put money on. But, when Christopher asked Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand V, they surprisingly approved of his idea, agreeing to fund his journey, mainly with the money they got from the wars they fought and won. In 1492, Christopher finally set out across the Atlantic Ocean, heading west. He eventually reached land in the Caribbean and claimed it for the Spanish. ( After all, they did fund his trip, didn't they? )
The Spanish Reconquista
At the time, the Muslim Moors had ruled over Spain for more than 700 years, but that would soon change. At the time, King Ferdinand V of Aragon united kingdoms by marrying Queen Isabella I of Castile and Leon. The reason for this unionization was to take back the land ruled by the Muslim Moors. Crusades were sent out to capture this land and even the Pope supported this movement, sending out conquistadors to help out. After a while, the King and Queen's crusades didn't come out in vain. They have finally taken the land! The Muslim King, King Tariq Ibn Ziyad, had given up being the leader due to losing the war with Spain, giving up his land and kingdom.
The Spanish Inquisition
This event happened after the Spanish Reconquista. After the Reconquista, the King and Queen, Isabella I and King Ferdinand V, believed that their country could only be truly united if everybody was under the same religion as their monarchs. This change involved everybody having to convert to Roman Catholicism, and if you didn't, you could be exiled, prisoned, tortured, or killed for being a heretic. The monarchs sent out missionaries to go to new lands to convert the people there into their religion. The Spanish Inquisition didn't end until 1834.
