Monarch butterflies. One was normal, but the other had a genetic mutation causing their wings to be smaller.
The North American Monarch migrates from the United States to Mexico in the winter to escape the cold. They endure heavy rain and wind on their journey. Their big wings help keep them on track and balanced. They have a better fitness than the smaller wings when it comes to migrating. Fitness means how well an organism is adapted to its environment.
While Most butterflies migrated to the forests in Mexico, some went to the Pacific Islands that ended up suiting their needs perfectly year round, making the need to migrate disappear.
Although they had a good habitat, they had predators who made the species go through evolution through natural selection. In this case, their predators hunted the larger winged monarchs easier because they were slower. Soon enough, the genetic variation of smaller winged monarchs was favored.
The predators put selective pressure on the long winged monarchs because they were easier to catch.
Ah! My wings are slowing me down!!!
The Monarchs that still migrated also encountered selective pressure. This time from the weather. The monarchs with the bigger wings easily glided in the strong wind but the monarchs with the smaller wings couldn't fly in the strong winds.
I'm fallinggggggg
