Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Pleasant, Ohio.
As a kid, Ulysses spent his time working with horses. He became very skilled in handling horses, and during his teenage years, his father signed him up in the United States Military Academy. There he got the name Ulysses S. Grant.
Grant graduated school ranking 21st in his class, and was stationed at St. Louis, Missouri
Grant spent his years after graduating dedicating to serving in wars, including the Mexican-American War.
In 1861, Grant led the Union through the Civil War, and brought with him a victory.
In 1869, Grant ran for president with no political experience. After showing his leadership leading the Union to victory during the Civil War, he was elected as president of the U.S. He was the youngest person to become president at the time.
