- February 21, 1916The Battle of Verdun begins. The French and German armies fight over the next 10 months. After the battle, entire French villages were wiped from the map. Millions of shells lie in that soil even a century after the battle.
- May 7, 1915A British ship Lusitania is attacked by a German submarine and sinks. it was carrying over a 170 tons of ammunition and artillery shells.
- May 31, 1916British and German fleets fight near the sea area of Jutland.
- March 15, 1917Tsar Nicholas II abdicates the throne because of Russian riots and a revolution in Russia gave rise to the Bolsheviks.
- July 1, 1916The first battle of Somme begins. The British tended to draw the attention of the Germans from Verdun and this was the only way in which they succeeded. On July 1, the British lost nearly 20,00 men which was the single bloodiest day in history for the British army.
- April 6, 1917The USA declares war on Germany because of its submarine warfare.
- November 20, 1917The British surprise attack the Germans at Cambrai, France using tanks and got around 7,500 prisoners. However due to bad weather, they almost returned back to their original positions.
