- Man vs ManBrian was being talked to by the lawyers about his parents divorce and he said he hated it. He didn't like how they explained everything in legal terms while smiling to make them not feel as bad. In the text it says " A tearing, ugly word that meant fights and yelling, lawyers-God he thought, how he hated lawyers who sat with their comfortable smiles and tried to explain to him in legal terms how all that he lived in was coming apart-and the breaking and shattering of all that solid things."

- Man vs SelfBrian and his friend Terry were on a bike ride and he saw his mom with another man in a car. He was embarrassed considering the fact that he was with his friend and caught his mom with som other man. On page 30 the story says "She was sitting in a station wagon, a strange wagon."
- Man vs NatureAfter Brian woke up after the plane crash, the day turned to night, and the mosquitos bit him all over the place. When he woke up that morning, his eyes were nearly swollen shut. On page 34-35 it states " In moments his eyes were swollen shut and his face puffy and round to match his battered forehead."
