- the other Indian boys chased me from one corner of the playground to the other. They pushed me down , buried me in snow until i couldn't breath, thought I'd never breathe again.

- Once, she gave the class a spelling test but set me aside and gave me a test designed for junior high students. When I spelled all the words right, she crumpled up the paper and made me eat it.

- What's that boy been drinking? I know these Indian kids. They start drinking real young.
- man vs societyThrough out the story Sherman Alexie was bullied throughout first- sixth grade. He was bullied by teachers and students. his teacher would always say harsh words about his race. The students called Sherman bloody nose' and many other names.

- The protagonist of the story, Sherman Alexie is a round and dynamic character. Most of the characteristics of Sherman are indirect. The antagonist of the story would be society. Society made Sherman's school life difficult and unfair.

- The setting of the story helps build and create conflict by putting the protagonist in an environment where he is experiencing discrimination from his classmates and teachers in the school.
- Theme
- The Intro is told in a third-person point of view giving us background info on Sherman Alexie. The rest of the story is in first person point of view told to us by the main character Sherman Alexie. The story is told in the first person and shows how all the hate affects Sherman and makes the story more personal.

- The climax of the story occurs when Sherman Alexie kisses a white girl, he felt as if he said goodbye to his entire tribe. He kissed a white girl and felt like he said goodbye to all the Indian girls and women he might have loved. He felt like he betrayed his tribe, making this his lowest point.
- I help my lips tight against her lips, a dry, clumsy, and ultimately stupid kiss. But I was saying goodbye to my tribe- all the Indian girls and women I could have loved.
- Sherman Alexie dealt with lots of hate and racism throughout his school career. Despite that, he was successful and valedictorian of his school. Even when overcome with hate and prejudice you can always succeed.
- I walk down the isle, valedictorian of this farm town high school...I remain stoic for the photographs as I look toward the future.
