- The story of the life of the Buddha begins in Lumbini, modern-day Nepal, at around 563 BCE. The wealthy Gautama family of the ruling Kshatriya caste lived in a beautiful palace, luxurious and pleasurable.
- One night, the queen Maya had a dream. A pure, white elephant descended from heaven and entered her womb. For 10 months, she carried him and she could see him in her womb.

- 10 months later, as the queen was strolling in a garden, she gave birth from her side to the baby that would be named Siddhartha, meaning "he who achieves his aim".
