Sarah has recently contracted measles, a virus. She has sneezed causing air droplets containing the measles virus to spread in the air
Sarah’s friend, Tom, had inhaled some of the cough droplets from her sneezing, resulting in Tom getting infected. He has a fever, a red rash on his skin and a runny nose.
Globally, millions of children continue to receive the MMR vaccination in 2 doses at childhood. The vaccination works by stimulating the immune system (lymphocytes) to make antibodies. These antibodies have a specific shape to bind to the antigen and destroy it. Memory cells can then recognise the antigen when the pathogen invades to make antibodies fast and in large quantities.
Due to the nature of measles, there is no treatment for Tom.
Tom remains resting at home, until he is well again.
Sarah’s other friend, Alison returns home to tell her mother about Sarah’s infection. Her mother reminds her that she received 2 doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella ) vaccination as a child.
